Storm Alert – September 9, 2024

By Published On: September 9, 2024Categories: Alerts, Storm Season

Potential Tropical Cyclone Six, formerly known as Invest 91L, has emerged as the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season enters its peak. Currently in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, Potential Tropical Cyclone Six has a 90% chance of formation within the next 48 hours. It’s expected to move near Mexico’s northern Gulf coast on Tuesday and approach the upper Texas and Louisiana coastlines on Wednesday.

Tropical rains are expected to bring up to 12 inches of flooding. The storm may impact areas previously hit by Hurricane Beryl in July, which caused flooding and power outages near Houston. If the storm makes landfall in Texas as a hurricane, it would be the first time in 16 years that two hurricanes hit Texas in the same year, last seen in 2008. The last storm to hit Louisiana was Category 4 Hurricane Ida in 2021.

Mansfield is also monitoring several other areas for potential development this week. One system in the Central Tropical Atlantic shows low pressure with favorable conditions for further development. A tropical depression could form as it meanders in the Central Tropical Atlantic before moving westward later in the week. The chance of formation within the next seven days is 70%. Another formation near the Cabo Verde Islands is experiencing disorganized storms that could interact with a tropical wave off Africa’s coast. A tropical depression could form by mid to late week as the system moves northwestward, with a chance of formation at 50%.

The National Hurricane Center warns that, while the exact impacts of these storms are still uncertain, there is an increasing risk of life-threatening storm surges and damaging winds along parts of the Upper Texas and Louisiana coastlines starting Tuesday night.

As this storm approaches, please stay mindful and plan accordingly. We will continue to monitor market conditions and keep customers informed as the situation progresses.
