In this episode, we discuss bearish crude signals, diesel tightness, winter demand, refinery constraints, and geopolitical risks shaping markets heading into 2026.

Sydney Casey and Andy Milton (SVP of Supply at Mansfield Energy) recap Q4 market conditions, starting with geopolitical and supply headlines, like the U.S. seizing a sanctioned oil tanker off Venezuela, and what those events could signal for crude flows and pricing. Andy explains why U.S. gasoline demand likely peaked in 2019 and may not return to prior highs, pointing to more efficient vehicles, EVs/hybrids, and remote work as long-term demand headwinds. They also cover why U.S. production has held up despite a sharply lower rig count, and how OPEC’s planned capacity audit could become a bullish issue later if it reveals less spare capacity than the market assumes.

The conversation then shifts to inventories, refining, and winter distillate risk. Andy describes a market that feels bearish today due to expectations for more supply in the next 12–24 months, but warns that diesel can stay relatively tighter—especially with high refinery utilization, upcoming turnarounds, and refinery closures. He explains the wide diesel-to-gasoline spread as a signal for refiners to maximize diesel yield, notes some regional tightness in #1/kerosene for blending, and emphasizes being prepared with additives ahead of storms. On price, he acknowledges downside into the low $50s is possible, but says it may not last if it starts to curb production—while upside risk back toward the $70s could return quickly if OPEC pivots, sanctions tighten, or geopolitical conflict escalates.
