Another Snowpocalypse? Winter Storm Landon Sweeps Through Eastern US

This morning more than 2,000 miles of territory in the eastern United States are being bombarded with dangerous winter weather. Winter Storm Landon is bringing heavy snow and ice across much of the East and Midwest, with conditions expected to get worse after the snow clears and ice remains.

Over 100,000 people in the path of the storm are now without power. With over 100 million people stretching 25 states in winter weather alerts this morning, this number is expected to rise as ice clinging to power lines and fallen trees are the primary aggressors of the outages. Conditions in Texas are reminiscent of the Texas Winter Storm from last year that saw thousands of residents without power for over a week. This new storm will certainly put the Texan power grid to the test after over 200 people died last year in the state because of hypothermic conditions associated with the Texas Winter Storm. Dallas has reported that their largest airport, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, has closed today due to the extreme winter conditions.

Some areas such as Colorado Springs have already received over 20 inches of snow since the storm landed, with parts of Illinois and Indiana also covered by over a foot of snow and ice. The problem with Winter Storm Landon will be the cold that lasts after the blizzards have passed. Iced over roads will be expected through the weekend and potentially into early next week, making driving conditions dangerous. This will likely bring the supply chain to a halt until trucks can resume normal operations. For the latest Winter Storm alerts, click here to subscribe to the FuelsNews Daily Storm Alert group.
