Storm Alert – Tropical Storm Hone – August 23, 2024

By Published On: August 23, 2024Categories: Alerts

Hawaii braces for Tropical Storm Hone as it approaches the islands this weekend, bringing with it the potential for strong winds and heavy rainfall. The storm is expected to primarily affect the Big Island and Maui as it moves south of the island chain.

Tropical Storm Hone, currently moving westward at 16 mph with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, is expected to bring sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph to Maui and the Big Island. Oahu and Kauai may experience slightly weaker winds. Rainfall predictions indicate that the Big Island’s east coast and southeastern areas could receive 4 to 8 inches of rain, while Maui might see 2 to 4 inches. These forecasts could change depending on the storm’s trajectory.

The National Weather Service has issued a tropical storm watch for Hawaii County, which includes the Big Island, in anticipation of the storm’s arrival. Hone, the first named storm of the 2024 Central Pacific hurricane season, has stirred memories of last summer’s devastating wildfire in Lahaina, Maui. However, the conditions are not the same.

As the storm progresses, companies and residents should get prepared for its potential impact, mindful of the severe drought conditions that have overwhelmed the islands this summer. The combination of dry soil and strong winds raises concerns about wildfires, a fear still fresh after last year’s catastrophic fires on Maui.

Hurricane Gilma

In addition to tracking Hone, meteorologists are closely watching Hurricane Gilma, a Category 3 hurricane in the eastern Pacific, slowly moving westward. While it is too early to determine if Gilma will directly impact Hawaii, its development is being monitored carefully.

Mansfield will continue to monitor the storms’ path and will work with local supply and delivery contacts to maintain reliable deliveries.
