Winter Storm Alert – January 21, 2026
A significant winter storm is expected to impact more than 150 million people across 24+ states from Friday through the weekend, stretching from the Southwest and Southern Plains through the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast.
The storm is forecast to bring heavy snow, ice, and prolonged freezing temperatures, creating dangerous travel conditions, widespread power outages, and extended disruptions across the region. Major metro areas in the storm’s path include Dallas, Austin, Oklahoma City, Nashville, Atlanta, Charlotte, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston.

What This Means for Fuel Markets
Freezing temperatures can have numerous impacts on fuel markets. Consider some of the following items to determine what impacts the wintery mix could have on your operations:
1. The most direct impact will be on the fuel trucks – icy road conditions can make deliveries unsafe, causing delays. Ensure your fuel tanks have been topped off and are ready ahead of the storm. You should also communicate any changes in demand – if your trucks will be parked during the storm, let your supplier know that your consumption may decrease.
2. Unusually low temperatures in typically warm regions could cause diesel gelling, leading to operability issues. When ordering fuel, you can request a winter additive or kerosene blend be delivered to ensure operability. Talk to your supplier to understand whether your fuel is already treated.
3. With power outages possible across the impacted region, consider any generator demand. Keeping generators full and ready for icy conditions is important to maintaining critical facility operations.
