Winter Storm Alert – November 27, 2024

By Published On: November 27, 2024Categories: Alerts, Uncategorized

A powerful winter storm is affecting Thanksgiving travel plans for millions across the U.S., moving coast-to-coast with heavy snow, rain, and severe weather. After slamming the West Coast with rain and mountain snow, the storm pushed into the Rockies, where cities like Denver remain under Winter Weather Advisories. It is now advancing into the Plains, Midwest, and Northeast, threatening widespread winter weather over the holiday weekend.

The Midwest and Ohio Valley may experience light snow accumulations, although warmer temperatures could prevent it from sticking to major roadways. By Thanksgiving, colder air from Canada will bring heavier, wet snow to interior parts of the Northeast, particularly in higher elevations like the Catskills, Adirondacks, and Green and White Mountains. These areas face hazardous travel conditions and potential power outages. Sub-zero temperatures will also impact diesel operability in Northern Plains areas.

In the mid-Atlantic and southern New England, steady rain will affect travelers, especially along the busy I-95 corridor through cities such as Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. Meanwhile, lake-effect snow could dump feet of accumulation over several days in parts of the Great Lakes region, significantly impacting highways like I-90 between Cleveland and Buffalo and I-81 north of Syracuse. Wind gusts of 20–30 mph may exacerbate disruptions, particularly for air travel in the Midwest.

The National Weather Service warns of difficult to impossible travel in the hardest-hit areas due to poor visibility and deep snow. Travelers should anticipate delays, potential road closures, and challenging conditions throughout the holiday weekend.

Depending on the severity of the storm, diesel fuel will be at increased risk for gelling, and strong wind gusts could lead to fuel trucks being pulled off the roads in certain markets. Mansfield will continue to monitor market conditions and keep customers alerted as the situation progresses.

Mansfield is proactively working with customers to ensure that tanks in cold weather areas have the proper additive and kerosene treatment. If you are not currently a part of Mansfield’s ColdPRO program to receive winterized fuel, or if you have any questions, please reach out to your account representative or email info@mansfieldoil.com.
