Storm Alert – September 24, 2024 – Tropical Cyclone Nine
Tropical Cyclone Nine has shifted its trajectory and is now forecast to intensify into a major hurricane before making landfall. According to the latest advisory, the storm is currently about 150 miles west of Grand Cayman with sustained winds of 35 mph, moving northwest at 9 mph. It’s expected to pass through the northwestern Caribbean tonight and over the eastern Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday and Thursday, strengthening into a hurricane by Wednesday and continuing to intensify through Thursday. If named, the storm will be called Helene.
In response, U.S. oil producers are evacuating staff from Gulf of Mexico platforms as the storm approaches. The National Hurricane Center predicts that the cyclone could become a Category 3 hurricane with winds up to 115 mph. This poses serious risks of life-threatening storm surge and damaging winds, particularly for the northeastern Gulf Coast and Florida Panhandle.
Florida has watches and warnings in effect, signaling the potential for severe tropical storm and hurricane conditions within the next 36-48 hours. The Florida Big Bend and Gulf Coast could see storm surges exceeding 10 feet, especially in areas like Cedar Key, potentially surpassing the surge levels seen during Hurricane Idalia in 2023. The storm will also bring high winds and the risk of flash flooding as far inland as Georgia, the Carolinas, and the southern Appalachians. Widespread power outages and structural damage are possible in affected areas.
Mansfield has been proactive in anticipation of this storm intensifying and has actively worked to top off customers’ tanks in the potentially affected areas. In light of the potential threats from this storm, Mansfield is moving the state of Florida to Code Orange and requesting 48 hours for new deliveries. Georgia and Alabama will remain on a 24-hour call-in status; however, same-day loads will not be accommodated.
