Storm Alert – Hurricane Delta: Code Orange

Hurricane Delta has strengthened to a Category 3 hurricane, with sustained winds up to 120 mph, and will make landfall along the Louisiana coast later today. Some forecasts show the storm may weaken before it makes landfall; however, it will remain a formidable storm when it hits the coast. The National Hurricane Center warned that “life-threatening storm surge” of up to 11 feet is possible in some places, and tropical storm force winds could radiate up to 125 mile outward from the center of the storm. Heavy rainfall, damaging winds, and storm surge are all expected in the same areas hit by Hurricane Laura in late August.

Crude producers took actions to protect personnel and property ahead of the storm. According to Reuters, oil producers withdrew workers from hundreds of offshore facilities and moved 15 drilling rigs away from Delta’s winds, shutting in 1.7 MMbpd of oil production in the process. Fuel terminals, refineries, and ports are planning closures until the storm passes.

Mansfield is currently on Code Orange for the coastal areas of each of the following states: northern Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle.
