Storm Alert – September 22, 2020 – Tropical Storm Beta- Code Orange

Tropical Storm Beta made landfall on Monday night along the middle Texas coast near the Matagorda Peninsula. Beta is moving slowly as it tracks directly along the Texas coastline. The system will bring heavy rain, storm surge, and possible flooding from the northern Texas coast to Louisiana over the next few days. In response to the storm, both Louisiana and Texas declared states of emergency to address the damage.

It’s been quite an active hurricane season, and weather forecasters have had to move to the Greek alphabet for storm names. The all-time record number of storms during one season came in 2005, with 27 named storms. Analysts expect 2020 will exceed that record, though with fewer hurricanes than 2005. Given Beta’s landfall, this year is tied with 1916 for most named storms to hit the  continental US. With several weeks left in the hurricane season, businesses should be prepared for continued weather activity in the Gulf and along the East Coast.

Mansfield is initiating Code Orange as a precaution for coastal Texas and Louisiana. Supply and logistics personnel will track the progression of the storm and report if additional action is required by sites to remain fueled.
